Phil’s earliest memories in his life is about fishing. My dad took me fishing when I was three years old and I caught a catfish almost as large as me. That was the beginning of my passion for fishing. Over the years I have caught fish in every way you can but I had never fly fished. My friend Jeff took me fly fishing to the Big Thompson and I caught my first brown on a caddis dry and the rest is history. Phil dove into the world of fly tying, a logical evolution in this Zen-like past time.
Phil believes that there is nothing more satisfying then tying a fly, presenting your fly, watching the fish take it, fighting it, landing it and then releasing it. If you have ever watched Phil tie at the shows and at the fly shops you can see his passion for fly tying. He loves to share his patterns with people and share the techniques to tie them. If you are ever at a fly show, you’ll see him tying next to his best friend Rick Takahashi, both having a blast sharing with people. He supports our disabled veterans through Project Healing Waters by teaching fly tying and guiding. He believes that we can’t forget the sacrifices that our veterans have made for our freedom.
Phil is an Umpqua Feather Merchants Signature Fly Designer and an Ambassador for Whiting Farms and can be seen tying his Iwan-e-Dun Parachutes, Iwan-e-Dun Thorax Patterns and No Mercy Midge at The Fly Fishing Show, ISE Show, WDTU Fly Tying Clinic, Orvis Park Meadows Fly Tying Fest, Fly Fishing Rendezvous, Bass Pro Shop, Battle a Boxwood (Project Healing Waters), SVTU Fly Tying Expo, Larimer County Fairground Fly Tying Expo, Western Colorado Fly Fishing Expo and many of the Colorado Fly Fishing Shops.
Phil is married to Patty and has four great children, Aaron, Jessica, David and Isaac and of course they all love fishing. When he’s not tying and fly fishing, he’s working at his interior design company, Kitchen, Bath Design and More.
